Will an air freshener kill a new car smell forever?

My Mustang is an 03' but it still has a new car smell. The smell kinda bothers me and gives me a headache...but I want the smell to stay for car shows and for if I ever sell it. Will an air freshener temporarily change the smell or once I use it the new car smell is gone?
